Sun, Surf and Style in Georgia TYBEE ISLAND Explore the Region’s Rich Heritage Originally settled by the Native American Euchee tribe (the word tybee means “salt” in the Euchee language), Tybee Island has held an important place in Georgia history for hundreds of years. Put these attractions on your list of things to see, do and experience. Tybee Island Light Station Tybee Island Light Station is Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse, and its distinctive black-and-white striped facade is visible for miles. The lighthouse was originally made from wood in 1736 and was replaced by brick around 40 years later. Climb nearly 200 steps to the top of the tower and catch a glimpse of the surrounding beaches and marshes. And be sure to spend time in the adjoining museum, which offers exhibits, artifacts and more. Fort Pulaski National Monument Located on neighboring Cocksure Island, Fort Pulaski National Monument offers a unique insight into the area’s history. It was originally a fortress and played a significant role during the Civil War; today, visitors can explore the fort's ramparts and tour exhibits that delve into the daily lives of the soldiers who were stationed there. Tybee Island Pier Constructed in 1891, historic Tybrisa Pier served as one of the area’s premier tourist destinations for decades; its airy pavilion was a noted entertainment venue for “big band” music performances. Sadly, the original pier was destroyed by fire in 1967 - but thanks to the fundraising efforts of dedicated locals, a new structure, Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion, was built and opened in 1996. Take a stroll down to the end of the pier and gaze out over the water or enjoy an afternoon of fishing. The pavilion can also be rented out for special occasions.
